MPEG4 h.264 … exciting times ahead
A couple of weeks ago, the BBC nonchalantly announced it was launching an enhanced version of the iPlayer with better quality video. Like YouTube, they’ve started using the MPEG4 h.264 codec which provides better quality video at lower bitrates which, in simple terms, means better quality pictures for less bandwidth.
Here at Kensei, we’ve been streaming MPEG4 h.264 content since February this year and we’re very excited about the way things are going. Not only does h264 play exceptionally well in Adobe Flash (so you can view it on the web), it’s supported on an ever-growing range of products. With a day or two of development, we’ve added support for the iPhone, iPod touch, iPod video, N-series Nokia handsets, Xbox 360, PSP (and probably a bunch of other kit we’ve not seen yet) to several of our sites. Oh, and before you ask, we’re using our own encoding engine, not something we bought.
And with IPTV (TV over an Internet connection) looming large, and h264 at the forefront of that technology, we’re happy to be riding the wave!
